Nestled in the beautiful rural countryside of the Cartago province, is the quiet town of Turrialba where you will experience some of Costa Rica’s most beautiful views, and best whitewater rafting.
Located 53 km east of the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, Turrialba, it’s a great place to tour the pre-Columbian ruins at Guayabo, or the Parque Nacional Volcan Turrialba. This small town is host to beautiful street corners and amazing surrounding sceneries.
Interestingly, Turrialba is well-known for baseball because the Major League actually uses the Rawlings baseballs that are made in this very town.
It is one of the only places where you can directly access a Costa Rica volcano’s crater. From the summit on a clear day, you can see the spectacular sight of the far-off Irazu, Poas, and Barva volcanoes.
If you thrive on adventure, Turrialba has thrilling whitewater rafting down the Rios Pacuare and Reventazn rivers for all levels to enjoy. If you are a history lover, the Guayabo National Monument will spike your interest. It is Costa Rica’s only pre-Columbian ruins site open for public access and is sure to enlighten you to local life from as far back as 1000 BC to 1400AD. For the naturalist enthusiasts, a tropical agricultural research center called the Center for Agronomy Research and Development collects and performs research on plant life from all over the globe. No matter what your interest, a visit to Turrialba is something you will never forget!
