Detailed Itinerary
Early morning pick up at your hotel for the three-hour drive to the Limon area. Here a boat will be waiting for you to take you on backwater creeks to Tortuguero. Arrive at Tortuga Lodge mid-afternoon, your hotel for the next three nights. Located on a private rainforest reserve bordering Tortuguero National Park, the Lodge's rooms are open and airy, with all the amenities needed to make your stay comfortable. An award-winning swimming pool is surrounded by botanical gardens that lead to the nearby rainforest and river. Afternoon guided walk in the Lodge’s gardens. Dinner and overnight at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens.
After breakfast, you will depart on a boat tour into the rainforest of Tortuguero National Park. Originally intended to protect a major nesting beach of the Atlantic green sea turtle, the Park now protects 51,870 acres, one of the last large areas of tropical rainforest in Central America. Three species of monkeys (Spider, Howler and White-faced), Three-toed Sloths and river otters are frequently seen along the natural inland waterways and creeks. Caiman, iguanas, river turtles, Basilisk Lizards, and Poison Dart Frogs (Dendrobates) inhabit the area, along with more than 320 species of birds including all six species of kingfishers found in the new world, three species of toucans, eight species of parrots, and other neotropical species such as the Slaty-tailed Trogon, White-collared Manakin, Purple-throated Fruitcrow, and White-fronted Nunbird and many more species which we will have the opportunity to observe during this morning boat ride.
Return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, your guide will take you to the village of Tortuguero to see colorful Afro-Caribbean homes, the Park headquarters and the general goods store. You will also visit the Atlantic Green Sea Turtle Museum founded by the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC). The late Dr. Archie Carr began to study and tag the thousands of Atlantic Green Sea Turtles that every year come to Tortuguero Beach to lay their eggs from June through October. The study has continued without fail ever since, under the auspices of the CCC. It is the longest-running continuous study of its kind in the world, and it has had a profound effect on the community of Tortuguero. Following day includes an early morning birding walk and boat tour in nearby creeks. Kayaks available. Nights at Tortuga Lodge.
Feb. 21, 2006.“It was one of the best vacations we have ever had.”
Dear Selena: Jo Ann and I want to express our sincere thanks for all your efforts on our behalf before and during our wonderful trip to Costa Rica. It was one of the best vacations we have ever had, thanks in large part to you and Costa Rica Expeditions. We enjoyed every aspect of the trip: from the prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable drivers (Alberto especially) who took us from and to the airport, and Felipe, who was our wonderful driver everywhere else, to the excellent accommodations at La Quinta and at Savegre. We were very happy to know that everything was in your capable hands. I also want to thank you for your kind concern when my father died, and for helping us to make it possible to come to Costa Rica anyway for 2 of the 3 places we had planned to visit. Please be assured that we will return to Costa Rica as soon as possible.
