Overview
This trip takes you from the jungles of the North Atlantic sector, where you will stay at Tortuga Lodge, to the beaches of Costa Rica's South Pacific. Starting in Tortuguero, you will explore the rainforest creeks of Tortuguero National Park with a guide and perhaps view the Atlantic Green Sea Turtle laying her eggs (seasonal). Then you'll travel to Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp to explore the canopy from 120 feet up in a tree platform. Finally you will see the country's southern coast, staying on the beach at the Cristal Ballena Hotel.
Detailed Itinerary
Morning pickup by a guide and drive to the Atlantic lowlands near Limon (2- hours). About midday board the boat with a Tortuguero Guide and depart for a 2-4 hour trip to Tortuguero. Arrive at Tortuga Lodge mid-to-late afternoon. Rest of the day free to explore the hotel surrounding trails, or relax. Overnight at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens.
After breakfast explore the creeks of Tortuguero National Park by boat with a Tortuguero Guide to observe the wildlife and flora. Originally intended to protect a major nesting beach of the Atlantic Green Turtle, Tortuguero National Park now protects 21,000 hectares of tropical rainforest - one of the last, large areas of tropical rainforest in Central America.
Three species of monkeys (Spider, Howler and White-faced), Three-toed Sloths and River Otters are frequently seen along the natural inland waterways and creeks. Caiman, iguanas, river turtles, Basilisk Lizards and Poison-Dart Frogs (Dendrobates) inhabit the area along with more than 320 species of birds including all six species of kingfishers found in the new world, three species of toucans, eight species of parrots and other neotropical species such as the Slaty-tailed Trogon, White-collared Manakin, Purple-throated Fruitcrow, and White-fronted Nunbird. You will view the wildlife from boats, which navigate the wide-open, tree-lined canals of the Park. In the afternoon, you have the option to rent the kayaks for a visit to the canals, which is a great form to access some of the most remote areas of the Tortuguero National Park (at additional cost). Overnight at the Tortuga Lodge.
After an early breakfast you will depart Tortuga Lodge to meet your Costa Rica Adventure Vacation chartered flight** back to San Jose (35 mins). Upon arrival, transfer to the correct hangar, for the 50-minute chartered flight to Carate, about a mile southeast of Corcovado Lodge. With a Corcovado Guide, walk 30-45 minutes to the Lodge (luggage will be transported by Lodge). After lunch, walk on a trail lined by secondary forest that runs parallel to the beach for 2 kms to the mouth of the Madrigal River. Several small creeks offer opportunities to observe birds and mammals. It is not unusual to spot White-faced monkeys, Tamandua and Red-capped Manakins along the way. Upon arrival at the mouth of the Madrigal River hike upstream on the riverbank. The terrain makes for slow going and tricky footing but among the Crysophila Palms and woody vines you may discover wildlife. There will be time for a swim in a fresh-water swimming hole, then backtrack down stream to end up on the beach. Dinner and overnight at Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp.
Experience the world of the rainforest canopy via our tree platform. Located within the remote Corcovado Lodge Reserve, adjacent to Corcovado National Park on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, the canopy platform system effortlessly lifts you 120 feet into emergent old growth trees to experience a world rarely touched by man. Since this is higher than an eight-story building, we do not suggest this trip for people who suffer from vertigo or fear of heights. However, from this new vantage point you have the opportunity to view and enjoy life in a primary rainforest canopy through the trained eyes of a certified Platform Guide. Return to the lodge around noon. Afternoon free. Overnight at Corcovado Lodge.
Either early or mid morning (depending on the tides) walk 30-45 minutes to the Carate airstrip with a Corcovado Guide for your Costa Rica Adventure Vacatiom chartered flight to Palmar Sur (30 mins.), where upon arrival a representative from your hotel will be waiting for you. Rest of the day open to explore the beach area and hotel. Overnight at Cristal Ballena Hotel or similar.
Free day at the beach or participating in optional activities (at additional cost) such as kayaking, diving, surfing, whale watching, etc. Overnight at Cristal Ballena or similar.
Local transfer to the Palmar Sur airstrip for a Costa Rica Adventure Vacation chartered flight back to San Jose (45 mins). Upon arrival a guide will provide transportation to your hotel. Overnight at the Real Inter-Continental Hotel.
Transfer to the international airport, arriving approximately two hours before your flight's scheduled departure time.
Feb. 11, 2006. “An awesomely excellent expedition to Tortuguero and Corcovado.”
Greetings from cold Champaign, Illinois! We want to commend your organization for an awesomely excellent expedition to Tortuguero (staying at Tortuga Lodge) and Corcovado (staying at the tent camp) and on to Arenal. Starting with Nadya Shaw, every single encounter with Costa Rica Expeditions went precisely as planned - unfortunately, not always our experience with others. The people who picked us up, took care of us, and who guided us through the rainforests were ALL excellent folks we would be glad to have as friends. I would name the best, but they would all make the list. The facilities were also wonderful and the service primo.
