Overview
Visit Tortuguero and stay at Costa Rica Adventure Vacation's Tortuga Lodge, recently mentioned in Travel & Leisure Family as a "favorite family resort." Then fly to the Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp for two nights immersed in nature. Here, you will explore the canopy from a platform located eight stories up a tree. Then, drive to the Monteverde Lodge to walk in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Detailed Itinerary
Morning pickup for drive to the Atlantic lowlands near Limon. About mid-day, board the boat with a Tortuguero Guide and depart for a 2 to 4-hour trip to Tortuguero. Originally intended to protect a major nesting beach of the Atlantic Green Sea Turtle, Tortuguero National Park now protects 51,870 acres, one of the last large areas of tropical rainforest in Central America. Eleven habitats are found in the park. Three species of monkeys (Spider, Howler and White-faced), Three-toed sloths, and River Otters are frequently seen along the natural inland waterways and canals. Caiman, iguanas, River Turtles, Basilisk Lizards and Poison Dart Frogs (Dendrobates) inhabit the area, along with more than 320 species of birds including all six species of kingfishers found in the new world, three species of toucans, eight species of parrots, and other neotropical species such as the Slaty-tailed Trogon, White-collared Manakin, Purple-throated Fruit Crow, and White-fronted Nun Bird. Arrive at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens mid-to-late afternoon for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, explore the canals of Tortuguero National Park by boat with your Local Guide to observe wildlife and flora. Return for lunch at Tortuga Lodge. Afternoon at leisure. Optional activities are available at an additional cost. Overnight Tortuga Lodge.
After breakfast transfer across the river to the Tortuguero airstrip for the direct flight to San Jose (35 minute flight). Upon arrival, continue on an approximately one-hour flight to Carate (one mile southeast of Corcovado Lodge). Upon arrival to Carate, walk 30-45 minutes with a Corcovado Guide to the Lodge (luggage will be transported by the Lodge). While by no means easy or probable, here the visitor will have the best chance in Costa Rica to actually see the large mammals - jaguar, tapir, ocelot and peccaries - which have come to symbolize the tropical rainforest. There is a good chance that the visitor will have the thrill of seeing recent signs of their existence and knowing that they are in the habitat of these almost mythical creatures. Free afternoon for hiking through Corcovado Lodge Preserve and/or Corcovado National Park. Overnight at Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp.
Half-day guided trip to our tree platform in the rainforest canopy where more than half of the jungle wildlife is found. Located within the remote Corcovado Lodge Reserve, adjacent to Corcovado National Park on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, the canopy platform system effortlessly lifts you over 100 feet into emergent old growth trees to experience a world rarely touched by man. Since this is higher than an eight-story building, we do not suggest this trip for people who suffer from vertigo or fear of heights. However, from this new vantage point you have the opportunity to view and enjoy the life in a primary rainforest canopy through the trained eyes of a certified Platform Guide. Overnight at Corcovado Lodge.
Either early in the morning or at mid-day (depending upon the tides), return to San Jose in reverse order from above. Pickup by service guide at the domestic airport for a 4 1/2-hour drive to Monteverde. Originally just 4,000 acres, the Monteverde Reserve now protects an area of approximately 25,000 acres, comprising six different life zones. So many habitats in such a small area, along with extensive trail improvements, allow visitors to enjoy a rich diversity of flora and fauna with relatively little and easy walking. The first 2 1/2-hours are on the Pan-American Highway and the last two hours are on a winding gravel road. Dinner and overnight at Monteverde Lodge & Gardens or similar.
Join morning excursion (of up to 10 people) to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve accompanied by Monteverde Guide from the Reserve. Return to your hotel at mid-day. Afternoon on your own, relaxing or participating in optional activities (available at additional cost). Overnight at Monteverde Lodge or similar.
After lunch drive approximately 4 1/2-hours to San Jose. Overnight at Hotel Grano de Oro.
Transfer to the international airport about three hours prior to the departure time for your flight out of the country.
The overnight stay at Grano de Oro (between the stays at your lodges) was very comfortable, and the restaurant there is top-notch. Great recommendation. Everything about how your lodges are run is first-rate, from the level of service, to the smooth execution of the ground and air transfers, to the comfort of the accommodations (I never realized tent living could be so luxurious), to the quality of the food, and to, most interestingly, the variety and caliber of the guests you attract. I wouldn't change a thing!
I'm already planning a return trip to the Tent Camp with at least one of our teen-age sons, hopefully this year. Corcovado is indeed God's country, and we'd not want to experience it any other way than with you folks. Thanks for a great vacation, it definitely is/was, as you say, an "unforgettable memory."
