Detailed Itinerary
Drive to the river to start your "Safari Adventure" (20 mins). The first part of the trip begins with a two-hour trip on inflatable boat. While you enjoy sounds from nature, your guide will periodically point out highlights of the flora and fauna. A characteristic day of wildlife viewing includes Howler Monkeys, crocodiles, toucans, two species of sloth, and many different types of local birds. A pause in the river trip, leads to Don Pedro's Farm for a hike into the primary tropical rainforest, with some of the oldest trees in the tropics. There you may find the exotic, "Blue Jean Frog" (Dendrobates pumilio).
A pause in the river trip, takes you to Don Pedro Carrillo's farm. He and his family live much like Costa Ricans lived in centuries past. Without electricity or common conveniences, the Carrillo family farms the land, growing much of their own food and making their own cheese. You will experience the simplicity and ingenuity of a lifestyle from days gone by and get a chance to sample the homemade cheese. Continue floating and admiring the flora and fauna for about 40 mins. towards Boca Arenal, the town where the bus will pick you up.
Night visit to the Hidalgo Family Hot Springs. The Hidalgo's are a Costa Rican family from the San Carlos area who made their fortune raising cattle for beef. Several years ago, they discovered a hot spring at one of their ranches on the skirts of the Arenal Volcano and built a swimming pool using water from the spring. They have now built nice pools where you enjoy a natural massage from the small cascade of hot spring water and spectacular views of the Arenal Volcano (weather permitting). Overnight at Arenal Observatory Lodge.
Morning 3-km. walk through the Arenal Hanging Bridges Project, with 15 bridges from 5 to 100 meters long. Here you will have the opportunity to see diverse flora and fauna and imposing views of the Volcano (weather permitting). After lunch, you will do a short walk at Arenal Volcano to learn about its history. Overnight at Arenal Observatory Lodge.
Morning land and boat transfers to Monteverde (approx. 4 hours). Afternoon visit to the Ecological Farm, a small private reserve where you will have the chance to see indigenous flora, birds and mammals. Overnight at Sapo Dorado Lodge.
Morning visit to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, which contains six ecologically diverse habitats in a small area, making it possible to observe many species and landscapes with relatively little walking. Afternoon visit of your choice: butterfly farm, serpentarium, orquid farm or frog pond. Overnight at Sapo Dorado Hotel.
Land transfer to the Taboga Airstrip (2-1/2 hours of winding gravel road and approx. 30 minutes of paved road). Here you will catch a Costa Rica ADventure Vacation chartered flight** to Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula (55 mins.). Please note that you may get your feet wet upon arrival to the airstrip, as you'll have to take a boat transfer to the hotel. Overnight at La Paloma Lodge.
Full day snorkeling tour at Isla del Cano. Cano Island and other coastal sites on the Osa Peninsula provide "unequaled parades of pelagic fish." (Skin Diver Magazine) Clouds of fish literally block the sun's rays in the clear waters as divers penetrate the fish schools. Brightly colored tropical fish, snapper, tuna, grouper, mackerel, jack, shark, trigger fish, barracuda (typically in schools), manta rays, eels, porcupine fish, sea urchins, octopus, lobster, sponges, sea cucumbers, and other marine species may be seen. There are 15 or more types of stony coral species as well as the attendant coral eaters (starfish, mollusks and hermit crabs).
The terrain varies widely and includes 20' reefs, 50' underwater pinnacles, canyons, walls and caves. Visibility is good to excellent all year round. Often marine life can be viewed 70' below the surface. Surface sightings include porpoises, Olive Ridley Sea Turtles, Whale Sharks, sea snakes and Humpback Whales. This area is a large marine ecosystem comprising more than 100,000 acres of mangrove wetlands and 1,000 miles of fresh and salt water rivers, estuaries and tributaries. Overnight at La Paloma Lodge.
Full day hiking in Corcovado National Park. The potential to see wildlife here is excellent and more than compensates for any discomforts due to weather or walking distance. Spider, Howler, White-faced and Squirrel Monkeys, Collared and White-lipped Peccaries, Coatis, Tapir and Jaguars all roam the forest in addition to nearly 400 species of birds. In the early morning, screeching Scarlet Macaws and vocal Howler Monkeys often provide an unusual alarm clock effect. Overnight at La Paloma Lodge.
Full day relaxing or participating in optional activities (at additional cost). Overnight at La Paloma Lodge.
In the morning fly back to San Jose. Upon arrival, a representative from Costa Rica Adventure Vacation will take you to your hotel. Afternoon free. Overnight at Hotel Grano de Oro.
Transfer to the international airport, arriving at least two hours before your flight's scheduled departure.
