Overview

Located in the Tilarn Mountain Range at 4,600 ft. above sea level on the edge of the world's best-known mid-elevation cloud forest, Monteverde Lodge is the expression of Costa Rica Expeditions' desire to create the ultimate lodging experience for the discerning nature traveler. The Lodge has 24 standard rooms and 3 garden rooms.

The dining room with its cloud forest mural, abundant tropical flora, and contemporary design is the perfect setting for enjoying the international and local dishes created by our talented chef, Valentin Corral, the person responsible for the meals at all our lodges. The rooms at the Lodge are designed to put you "in the forest" while protecting you from the mist and strong wind so characteristic of the area. All are spacious with solar heated hot water private baths.

Many of our guests find that their most enjoyable time in Costa Rica is spent in the Monteverde Lodge Gardens. Emphasizing ferns and bromeliads, we have chosen native plant species that replicate the natural cloud forest and attract its fauna. A running stream, pond and small waterfall provide a habitat for riverine birds and a host of reptiles and amphibians. Carefully placed benches provide a comfortable place, offer privacy and/or panoramic vistas to observe the wildlife, read, write, or just wile away the hours.

Reflecting our continuing commitment to minimum impact and rational use of resources, Monteverde Lodge was the pioneer hotel in the area in garbage separation for recycling. This is an attitude that has extended to the inhabitants of Monteverde to the point that the local Conservation League and the Cloud Forest Reserve are now in charge of recycling for most of the community.

Another expression of this commitment is the installation, with the help of the U.S. Department of Energy and a local energy efficiency expert, of a solar energy system that saves an average of 50% on our overall electrical energy consumption.* In addition to the solar panels, high efficiency lighting and water-saving fixtures have been installed to reduce the consumption of natural resources without sacrificing comfort.

Monteverde is a peaceful community made up of dairy farmers, naturalists and tourism service providers who have joined together to create a model for sustainable development and protection of the environment that is becoming known throughout the world. Founded in 1954 by a group of Quakers searching for a peaceful place to live, it is the home of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the Children's Eternal Rain Forest, and the Santa Elena Reserve.

Originally just 4,000 acres, the Monteverde Reserve now protects an area of approximately 25,000 acres, comprising six different life zones. So many habitats in such a small area, along with extensive trail improvements, allow visitors to enjoy a rich diversity of flora and fauna with relatively little and easy walking.

The Children's Eternal Rain Forest, which was purchased by the donations of literally tens of thousands of children from 44 countries all over the world, is adjacent to the Monteverde Preserve and operated by the Monteverde Conservation League.

Nearby, the newer Santa Elena Reserve provides a less developed but increasingly popular cloud forest experience. Over 2,000 plant species are native to Monteverde, including a host of wild orchids. Also, more than 400 species of birds and 100 species of mammals have been observed. The area's natural diversity provides an enchanting backdrop, which adds to the magic of relaxing at Monteverde Lodge.
