Overview
Visit a butterfly garden, take a sunset horseback ride and walk in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, where you may see the rare and beautiful Quetzal (seasonal). Then glide through the rainforest on the Waterfall Canopy Tour and observe wildlife in Carara National Park. Fly to Corcovado for deluxe camping at the Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp, where you will visit a 120-foot-high tree platform. Your trip ends with a two-day whitewater adventure on the exciting and scenic Pacuare River.
Detailed Itinerary
After breakfast you will be met by a Costa Rica Adventure Vacation service guide and driver for the approximately 1 -hour drive to Monteverde, a peaceful community of dairy farmers, naturalists and tourism service providers who have joined together to create a model for sustainable development and protection of the environment that is regarded around the world. Founded in 1954 by a group of Quakers searching for a peaceful place to live, it is the home of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the Children's Eternal Rainforest and the Santa Elena Reserve.
Late in the afternoon depart for a horseback ride accompanied by a Spanish-speaking guide. Ride through coffee and banana plantations and end up with a view of the sunset over the Gulf of Nicoya. Overnight at Monteverde Lodge & Gardens (standard room).
After breakfast, guided excursion in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Founded in 1972, the Reserve extends down both slopes of the Tilarn Mountains (elevation 2,300 to 5,600 ft.), encompassing six different ecological life zones and protecting more than 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds and 1,500 species of plants. From January to July, depending upon your luck and patience, you may observe in its natural habitat the Resplendent Quetzal (occasionally a dozen or more individuals at once). Other species include the Three-wattled Bellbird, Emerald Toucanet and White-faced and Howler Monkeys. Return to the hotel midday for lunch. In the afternoon, visit to the Butterfly Garden where butterflies and other insects are raised and displayed in shade cloth enclosures with tropical gardens. Meet your guide and driver for the trip to Carara (2- hours). Your guide will accompany you to the Waterfall Canopy Tour, near Carara National Park. This area is part of an important ecological transition zone between the country’s dry northwest and the humid southern zone. Much of the Canopy's 46 hectares of protected area is covered with transitional rainforest growing on steep slopes and studded with massive trees laden with vines and epiphytes. The Canopy Tour consists of 13 platforms, seven cables of varying lengths, a three-story tree house, a Tarzan swing, a suspension bridge and a 90-foot rappel down at the end (optional for adventure seekers). After the tour, you will have lunch in a local restaurant and continue on to your hotel. Overnight at Villa Caletas.
Morning boat tour on the Tarcles River. From your vessel you'll see and explore the magnificence of the Tarcoles River, its avifauna and a population of crocodiles in their natural habitat. From the jetty, the boats goes upriver to the crocodile habitat. Once there, tourists can take snapshots of the adult crocodiles as they approach within a few feet of the boat. Some of the crocodiles grow to over four yards in length. During the journey, which lasts about two hours, more than 50 species of native and migratory birds can be seen.
In the afternoon, experience the Outriggers Tour. Outrigger canoes have been plying the warm waters of the world for centuries. The outrigger remains basically unchanged from the original design and you learn to maneuver and navigate the coast as you paddle near the most beautiful beaches in the Jaco; area. Overnight Villa Caletas.
Short land transfer to the Jaco; Airstrip where you’ll board a Costa Rica Adventure Vacation’ charter flight** to Carate, about a mile southeast of Corcovado Lodge. Upon arrival, walk 30-45 minutes with a Corcovado Guide to the Lodge (luggage will be transported by horsecart). Free afternoon for hiking in the Lodge’s preserve and/or Corcovado National Park. Overnight Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp.
Join your guide on a trip to the rainforest canopy via our tree platform (or other half-day tour if you do not wish to participate in the platform). Located in the remote Corcovado Lodge Reserve, adjacent to Corcovado National Park, the canopy platform system effortlessly lifts you 120 feet into emergent old growth trees to experience a world rarely observed. From this new vantage point you will have the opportunity to view life in a primary rainforest canopy through the trained eyes of a certified Platform Guide. Return to the Lodge around noon. Afternoon free. Overnight at Corcovado Lodge.
Either early or mid morning (depending on the tides) you will walk back to the Carate Airstrip with a Corcovado Guide to catch your Costa Rica Adventure Vacation chartered flight to San Jose; (one hour).Upon arrival, you will be taken to your hotel in San Jose;. Overnight at the Hotel Grano de Oro or similar.
Early morning pickup by your River Guide at your hotel. Drive about an hour before stopping for breakfast. Continue to Santa Marta, where you will switch to a 4x4 shuttle to take you down to the put-in (depending on the road conditions, you may have to walk for less than one mile). Total drive time: 3-1/2 hours. After an orientation and safety talk, proceed down the river. Continuous Class III rapids and a hike up a side creek to a waterfall provide a perfect introduction to the magic of the Pacuare. Total river time: about 2 hours. This trip puts in four miles up-river from the One Day Pacuare Trip put-in. With more time to soak in the beauty of the canyon and awe-inspiring side hikes, for many participants, the Two Day Pacuare Trip transcends mere rafting and rises to a truly transforming experience. Overnight camping on the riverbank.
An early put-in means that you are virtually alone on the river for the first part of the day. Today you will experience the canyon, the rapids and the side hikes that have made the Pacuare famous. River time: approximately four hours. Mid-afternoon take-out. Return to San Jose; (2 hours). Overnight at Hotel Grano de Oro (deluxe room).
Transfer to the international airport approximately three hours before your flight's scheduled departure time.
