The Central Highlands of Costa Rica are encircled by slowly ascending volcanoes to the north and steep mountains to the south. The crisp Costa Rica weather and beautiful scenery make this a moderately populated area of the country.
Scenic drives around the Poas and/or Irazu volcanoes (both protected as national parks) are a main draw for this area. A popular spot to visit is Cafe Britt, where you can stop to taste coffee made from locally grown Costa Rica coffee beans. The Guayabo National Monument is a close by destination that is Costa Rica’s major pre-Columbian site. From a breeding center for endangered macaws, to a snake sanctuary, the Central Highlands have plenty of out-of-the-ordinary places for nature lovers to enjoy.
The upper mountain slopes are thickly forested and offer birders and hikers access along muddy trails where they will see two of the best Costa Rica whitewater runs, as they cascade out of the mountains.
This area is home to several upscale Costa Rica hotels to spend your relaxing nights at. With so much to see, you will want to stay at least 3, or 4 days to see the main sites, although, even after week, you will still be wishing you saw more!
