Overview
This is a scenic trip that starts in the highlands near Arenal, where you will walk over cascading gorges at the Hanging Bridges Project in a lush forest at the base of the Volcano. Then you will stay at Monteverde Lodge to visit the Cloud Forest Reserve. Spend your last four nights in Costa Rica at The Four Seasons, where you will have time to relax on the hotel's two private beaches, in the spa, or fine tuning your game on the championship golf course.
Detailed Itinerary
Morning visit the Arenal Hanging Bridges Project with eight fixed bridges, ranging in length between 8 and 22 meters, and six hanging bridges. Built with the latest techniques and designed with an eye for both beauty and safety, the hanging bridges are between 48 and 98 meters long and made of galvanized steel and high-strength aluminum. The safety mesh and the suspension cables are all galvanized steel. The entire project was designed to blend with the natural environment, leaving the forest virtually intact. The trails, covering a distance of about 3.1 kms, are right inside the forest. As you walk, you can appreciate a great diversity of flowers and wildlife that are typical of the rainforest as well as some imposing views of the Volcano (weather permitting).
Night visit to the Hidalgo Family Hot Springs, the ideal alternative to the mass tourism hot springs in the Arenal Area. When we first met the Hidalgo Family in 2000, they were reluctant to open up their family farm to visitors. Finally they agreed to try it by appointment only on a trial basis. They found, perhaps to their surprise, that they enjoyed having foreign guests on this basis and have now put in changing rooms and a restaurant. The springs consist of five free-flowing pools set in a natural river gorge. Water temperature ranges from 100F (38C) to 109F (43C) depending on the pool. A Costa Rican home-style meal in the restaurant, modeled after the first house that Don Manuel and Dona Hortemida Hidalgo built when they settled on the farm in 1940, is included. Overnight at The Lost Iguana.
Two days on your own relaxing or participating in optional tours (available at extra cost) such as: visits to the Volcano, the lake, La Fortuna town, bird watching, horseback riding, hiking, wind surfing and more. Nights at Lost Iguana. Please see Arenal Safety Guidelines.
Meet your driver in the hotel lobby for trip to Arenal Lake. Here you will board a boat for the 30-min. ride to Rio Chiquito, where land transportation will be waiting to take you to Monteverde (approximately 2 1/2-hour drive). Monteverde is a peaceful community made up of dairy farmers, naturalists and tourism service providers who have joined together to create a model for sustainable development and protection of the environment that is becoming known throughout the world. Founded in 1954 by a group of Quakers searching for a peaceful place to live, it is the home of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the Children's Eternal Rain Forest, and the Santa Elena Reserve. Rest of the day free. Overnight at Monteverde Lodge & Gardens.
Two days on your own relaxing or participating in optional tours (available at extra cost) such as: guided walk in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, sunset horseback ride, birding and more. Overnight at Monteverde Lodge.
Land transfer to the Gulf of Papagayo area (4 hours). Overnight at The Four Seasons.
Three days on your own at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel, with two beaches, world-class fishing, championship golf and access to the rainforest. Nights at The Four Seasons.
Land transfer to the Liberia International Airport, arriving at least two hours before your flight's scheduled departure.
Jan. 20, 2005. "The Monteverde Lodge was wonderful!"
We had a wonderful time in Costa Rica and will definatly be planning a return trip! I was a little hesitant in using your services because all correspondences were through e-mail, making it hard for me to get a sense of how reliable you would be. My comfort level rose when we were greeted in the San Jose airport and everything was so well organized. Additionally, Mauricio, our driver was so kind and knowledgeable about the country and it's wildlife that we felt the drive to Monteverde was an adventure in itself. Mauricio even pointed out our first monkey sighting and numerous birds along the way.
Once in Monteverde, the Monteverde Lodge was wonderful! We loved it! The food was delicious and the people kind and interested in our satisfaction. We will include it in our return trip. I miss sitting by the fire. I'd like to also say that Luz was wonderful in helping us and we appreciate all her efforts in making this a great trip! We look forward to our next trip and will be getting in touch to schedule.
