Overview
Start your Costa Rica exploration driving (on your own) to Arenal via the La Paz Waterfall Gardens in a rental car. In Arenal take a Safari Adventure float down the Peas Blancas River, during which your guide will share his or her knowledge of Costa Rica's diverse geography, rainforests and animal life. On Day 4, drive to Monteverde where you'll see the Cloud Forest Reserve - and perhaps one or more Resplendent Quetzales - during a guided hike. Finally head to the Pacific Coast to Manuel Antonio for three days of exploration and relaxation.
Detailed Itinerary
Breakfast at the hotel Grano de Oro. After breakfast a rental car will be delivered at the hotel. Drive to Arenal (about 4 hours) via the town of Sarapiqui, for lunch and a self-guided hike at La Paz Waterfall Gardens and Butterfly Farm. The Butterfly Observatory in La Paz Gardens is one of the largest in the world. It includes an on-site laboratory where countless species are bred.
The Trail of Falls provides great views of all five waterfalls. Templo Waterfall offers a unique canyonlike experience as it flows into a tight rock gorge. Accessible from the Trail of Falls, it is the furthest up river and well worth the hike. At the next viewing platform you will see two waterfalls, the Encantada and Escondida Falls, which unite in a rock gorge pool and create the powerful rushing water that becomes the spectacular and famous La Paz Waterfall. After a visit to the garden and waterfall, continue to Arenal. Overnight at The Lost Iguana Resort.
This morning, you will be meet at the hotel by a local guide for the one-hour drive to the Peas Blancas River for the "Safari Adventure" on inflatable boat. While you listen to sounds from nature, your guide will periodically point out highlights of the flora and fauna. A characteristic day of wildlife viewing includes Howler Monkeys, crocodiles, toucans, sloth and many different types of local birds.
Your guide will stop at Don Pedro's Farm. Here you may hike into the primary rainforest and perhaps find the exotic, "Blue Jean Frog" (Dendrobates pumilio). Don Pedro Carrillo and his family live much like Costa Ricans have lived in centuries past. Without electricity or common conveniences, the Carrillo family farms the land, growing much of their own food and making their own cheese. You will experience the simplicity and ingenuity of a lifestyle from days gone by and get a chance to sample the homemade cheese. After the visit, continue floating and admiring the flora and fauna for about 40 mins. towards Boca Arenal, the town where the bus will pick you up.
Return to the hotel. In the afternoon, visit the Arenal Hanging Bridges. This project consists of eight fixed bridges, ranging in length between 8 and 22 meters, and six hanging bridges, built with the latest techniques and designed with an eye for both beauty and safety. All the bridges are made of galvanized steel and high-strength aluminum. The entire project was designed to blend with the natural environment, leaving the forest virtually intact. The trails, covering a distance of 3 km, are inside the forest. As you walk, enjoy the imposing views of Arenal Volcano (weather permitting). Overnight at Lost Iguana.
Three full days at leisure. Optional activities are available at extra cost. Some of the tours available include guided visits to the Manuel Antonio National Park, fishing, kayaking, boat tours, hanging bridges and bird watching. Overnight Hotel Parador.
Feb. 16, 2006. “Monteverde Lodge was a special treat. The food was great. Our room was right next to the gardens…”
Just a word to let you know how much we enjoyed our Monteverde trip. The Spanish-speaking drivers were kind, considerate and helpful. Between my little Spanish and their little English we made out fine. They stopped when we asked for baos where facilities were clean and neat. They were safe drivers. Melvin Leiton , our guide at Monteverde, was absolutely wonderful. He showed us wonderful birds including many sightings of the Quetzal and was very considerate of our small group needs. He loves the forest and told us stories of his life there and his family. A big treat was that he invited us to his home to birdwatch and have a cup of coffee or tea. My husband remarked that the day was the best time he had on the whole trip through Panama and Costa Rica!
Monteverde Lodge was a special treat. The food was great. Our room was right next to the gardens where we could see birds and enjoy the flowers. Michael K just happened to be there and we visited with him a couple of times (I had met him on an International Expeditions fam trip 16 years ago). The staff was absolutely wonderful, especially at the desk. They spoke English well, were very accommodating and helpful and knew exactly what was supposed to happen when and how. We were most appreciative for their services. Thank you again for making all the arrangements and helping to make our visit to Costa Rica so special.
