The Arenal Volcano is one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world. It is one of the most popular attractions for Costa Rica tourism, next to the rainforest and beaches.
This famous Costa Rica volcano produces explosions of glowing red lava almost every day, since it erupted in 1968, after 400 years of resting. The Volcano killed 87 people and buried the three villages of Tabacon, Pueblo Nuevo & San Luis. 15 square kilometers were covered with rocks, lava and ash, after eruptions continued for several days. In total the eruptions affected more than 232 square kilometers by damaging crops, property, livestock and forests. Although the eruption destroyed the livelihood of many local citizens, the Costa Rica tourism has given the area a new economic drive.
Nowadays, there are over 25 Costa Rica hotels and resorts in the Arenal area and are all at a safe distance of the volcano. Hiking on the volcano beyond the warning signs is extremely dangerous as the toxic hot gases released during an eruption are traveling very fast, faster than you can run. Luckily the areas are clearly marked and guided tours are offered to keep you on course and take you to the perfect distance to safely enjoy the spectacular Costa Rica volcano.
